"Do they not see what is before them"—meaning: in front of them—"and what is behind them"—meaning: behind them—"of the heaven and the earth? If We will, We could cause the earth to swallow them up, or cause a fragment of the heaven to fall upon them." Al-kisf: the piece.

﴿أَفَلَمْ يَرَوْا إِلَى مَا بَيْنَ أَيْديهم﴾ يَعْنِي: أمامهم ﴿وَمَا خَلفهم﴾ يَعْنِي: وَرَاءَهُمْ ﴿مِنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالأَرْضِ إِنْ نَشَأْ نَخْسِفْ بِهِمُ الأَرْضَ أَوْ نُسْقِطْ عَلَيْهِمْ كِسَفًا مِنَ السَّمَاء﴾ الكسف: الْقطعَة.
