Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 4 · Page 120631

Translation · EN

"Indeed, We sent upon them a single blast [of punishment]." The blast is the punishment. "And they became like the dry, broken-up remains of an enclosure [fold]." This is the vegetation when it dries out, is scattered by the winds, and becomes fences/enclosures. This is the interpretation of those who read it as "al-muhtazir" with a kasrah under the zha; and whoever reads it as "al-muhtazar" with a fathah over the zha, the meaning is that it was made into enclosures.

Muhammad said: It is also said: The 'hashim' (broken-up remains) is what has dried up from leaves and become broken and crushed, meaning: they became like the 'hashim' which the owner of an enclosure gathers. In the interpretation of the one who read it as "al-muhtazir" with a kasrah under the zha, it means: he gathered [it] into an enclosure; and whoever read it as "al-muhtazar" with a fathah over the zha, it is a name for the enclosure itself.

Interpretation of Surat al-Qamar from verse 33 to verse 40.
