His saying: "And grain with husks, and sweet-smelling plants." The "husk" (al-'asf) refers to the stalks of crops. As for "sweet-smelling plants" (al-rayhan), it means provision in the interpretation of al-Kalbi. He used to recite it "al-rayhani" (in the genitive case), making both the husk and the sweet-smelling plants descriptive of the crops. Al-Hasan used to recite it "al-rayhanu" (in the nominative case) as a subject of an initial sentence, meaning: and in it are sweet-smelling plants. "Sweet-smelling plants" in the interpretation of al-Hasan refers to the aromatic plants that are smelled.
Muhammad said: The Arabs call provision "rayhan." It is said: I went out seeking the rayhan (provision) of Allah. From this is the saying of al-Namir ibn Tawlab:
(The peace of God and His rayhan [provision] … and His mercy, and life-giving rain)", "comments": "
قَوْله: ﴿وَالْحَبُّ ذُو الْعَصْفِ وَالرَّيْحَانُ﴾ العصف: سوق الزَّرْع، وَالريحَان: الرزْقُ فِي تَفْسِير الْكَلْبِيّ. وَكَانَ يقْرَأ ﴿وَالريحَان﴾ بِالْجَرِّ وَيجْعَل العصفَ وَالريحَان جَمِيعًا من صفة الزَّرْع، وَكَانَ الْحسن يقْرَأ (وَالريحَان) بِالرَّفْع على الِابْتِدَاء أَي: وفيهَا الريحانُ. وَالريحَان فِي تَفْسِير الْحسن: الرياحين الَّتِي تُشَمُّ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: وَالْعرب تسمي الرزق. الريحان، يُقَال: خرجت أطلب ريحَان اللَّه. وَمِنْه قَول النَّمِر بْن توْلَب:
(سَلَامُ الإِلَهِ وَرَيْحانُهُ … وَرَحْمَتُهُ وَسَمَاءٌ دِرَرْ)
