[They will call to them] The hypocrites will call to the believers when a wall is set up between them, [Was it not we who were with you] in the world upon your religion? [They will say, "Yes," ] meaning: in what you manifested, ["but you afflicted yourselves"] meaning: you brought yourselves into disbelief, waiting for the Prophet and saying, "He will perish and we shall return to our religion." ["And you were hesitant"] meaning: you doubted, ["and you were deluded by false hopes"] meaning: by what you used to wish for in your saying, "Muhammad and his companions will perish, and we shall return to our religion," ["until the command of Allah came."] One of them said: meaning death. ["And the Deceiver deceived you regarding Allah"] meaning Satan, who informed you through his whispering that you would not return to Allah.
﴿ينادونهم﴾ يُنَادي المُنَافِقُونَ الْمُؤمنِينَ حِين ضرب بَينهم بسور ﴿أَلَمْ نَكُنْ مَعَكُمْ﴾ فِي الدُّنْيَا على دينكُمْ ﴿قَالُوا بلَى﴾ أَي: فِيمَا أظهرتم ﴿وَلَكِنَّكُمْ فَتَنْتُمْ أَنفسكُم﴾ يَعْنِي: أكفرتم أَنفسكُم فتربصتم بِالنَّبِيِّ وقلتم: هلك فنرجع إِلَى ديننَا ﴿وارتبتم﴾ شَكَكْتُمْ ﴿وغرتكم الْأَمَانِي﴾ أَي مَا كُنْتُم تتمنون من قَوْلكُم: ُيهلك محمدٌ وَأَصْحَابه، فنرجع إِلَى ديننَا ﴿حَتَّى جَاءَ أَمْرُ الله﴾ قَالَ بَعضهم: يَعْنِي الْمَوْت ﴿وَغَرَّكُمْ بِاللَّه الْغرُور﴾ الشَّيْطَان أخْبركُم بالوسوسة إِلَيْكُم أَنكُمْ لَا ترجعون إِلَى الله
