[So today no ransom will be accepted from you] this is because they [will claim] faith on the Day of Resurrection, but it will not be accepted from them—those who disbelieved, meaning those who denied openly in the world. As for the hypocrites, they denied in secret and manifested faith, so all of them will believe in the Hereafter, yet it will not be accepted from them. [Your refuge is the Fire] meaning the disbelievers and the hypocrites. [It is your protector] meaning you used to take it as a protector in the world, so you performed the deeds of its people.
Muhammad said: It is also said that [It is your protector] means it is most appropriate for you because of what you have committed, and this is what Yahya also intended.
﴿فَالْيَوْمَ لَا يُؤْخَذُ مِنْكُمْ فِدْيَةٌ﴾ وَذَلِكَ أَنهم الْإِيمَان يَوْم الْقِيَامَة فَلَا يقبل مِنْهُم الَّذين كفرُوا يَعْنِي (ل ٣٥٣) الَّذين جَحَدُوا فِي الدُّنْيَا فِي الْعَلَانِيَة، وَأما المُنَافِقُونَ فجحدوا فِي السِّرّ وأظهروا الْإِيمَان، فآمنوا كلهم فِي الْآخِرَة فَلم يقبل مِنْهُم ﴿مَأْوَاكُمُ النَّارُ﴾ يَعْنِي الْكفَّار وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ ﴿هِيَ مَوْلاكُمْ﴾ أَي كُنْتُم تتولونها فِي الدُّنْيَا، فتعملون عمل أَهلهَا.
قَالَ محمدٌ: وَقيل (هِيَ مولاكم) هِيَ أولى بكم لما أسلفتم، وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَرَادَ يحيى أَيْضا.
