‘They will not fight you,’ meaning: the Jews, ‘all together except in fortified villages,’ meaning: they will not fight you due to the intensity of the terror that has entered them because of you, ‘or from behind walls.’ [358] Meaning, ‘their might among themselves is severe,’ meaning: when they gather, they say, ‘We shall do such and such to Muhammad.’ Allah said to His Prophet, ‘You think them gathered, but their hearts are divided,’ meaning: scattered regarding fighting you.
Tafsir of Surat al-Hashr from verse 15 to verse 17.
﴿لَا يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ﴾ يَعْنِي: الْيَهُود ﴿جَمِيعًا إِلَا فِي قُرًى مُّحَصَّنَةٍ﴾ أَي: لَا يقاتلونكم من شدَّة رعبهم الَّذِي دخلهم مِنْكُم ﴿أَوْ مِن وَرَاء جُدُرٍ﴾ ﴿ل ٣٥٨﴾ يَعْنِي ﴿بَأْسُهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ شَدِيدٌ﴾ أَي: إِذا اجْتَمعُوا قَالُوا: لنفعلن بِمُحَمد كَذَا ولنفعلن بِهِ كَذَا. قَالَ اللَّه لنَبيه: ﴿تَحْسَبُهُمْ جَمِيعًا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ شَتَّى﴾ أَي: مفرقة فِي قتالكم.
