Yahya said: It reached me that there was a worshipper among the Children of Israel who had renounced the world. He took a hermitage to worship in, and Satan sought to lead him astray but could not. When Satan saw that, he went to the daughter of the king, entered into her, and seized her. The physicians were called for her, but they were of no avail to her. He then spoke through her tongue, saying: "Nothing will benefit her except that you bring her to such-and-such a monk so that he may pray for her." They brought her to him and left her in his care. One day, her condition returned to her; she was revealed, and she was a beautiful woman. Her fairness and beauty amazed him, so he fell upon her and made her pregnant. Satan went to her father and her brothers, informed them, and said to him: "Kill her and bury her, and it shall not be known that you killed her." The monk killed her and buried her at the base of a wall. Her father and brothers came, and Satan came before them; he preceded them to the monk and said: "The people have learned what you did with the woman. If you prostrate to me once, I will turn them away from you." He prostrated to him. When he prostrated to him, Allah disgraced him, and Satan disowned him. Her father and brothers came, extracted her from where he had buried her, and proceeded to the monk and crucified him. Thus, Allah set forth the example of the hypocrites when they failed the Jews and did not support them, even though they had promised them support, as the example of Satan in this verse: {When he says to man: "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says: "I am free of you; indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds."} And he lied. Allah says: {So the outcome for both of them}—the outcome of Satan and that monk—{is that they will be in the Fire, abiding eternally therein. And that is the recompense for the wrongdoers}, the polytheists.
Muhammad said: His saying: (abiding eternally therein) is in the accusative case as a state (hal).
Interpretation of Surat al-Hashr from verse 18 to verse 21.
