His saying: "O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies," meaning in religion. "Extending affection to them," meaning: you extend affection to them. "While they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth, having driven out the Messenger and yourselves," meaning: they drove out the Messenger and yourselves "that you may believe in Allah, your Lord," meaning: they only drove you out of Mecca because you believed in Allah, your Lord. Then He said: "If you have come out for Jihad (struggle) in My cause and seeking My pleasure, you confide in them with affection," just as the hypocrites did. "And I am most knowing of what you have concealed and what you have declared. And whoever does that among you," meaning: whoever among you acts hypocritically, "has certainly strayed from the straight path," the middle of the path.
