"But Allah only forbids you from those who fought you because of religion"—meaning: the disbelievers of the people of Mecca—"and expelled you from your homes"—meaning: from Mecca—"and aided"—meaning: assisted—"in your expulsion, that you take them as allies."
Tafsir of Surat al-Mumtahanah, verse 10.
﴿إِنَّمَا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ قَاتَلُوكُمْ فِي الدّين﴾ يَعْنِي: كفَّار أهل مَكَّة. ﴿وَأَخْرَجُوكُمْ من دِيَاركُمْ﴾ يَعْنِي: من مَكَّة ﴿وظاهروا﴾ أعانوا ﴿عَلَى إِخْرَاجِكُمْ أَنْ تَوَلَّوْهُمْ﴾.
