'And We left upon him'—meaning, We preserved for him—'among the later generations' a good mention; [he means the good remembrance due to his honoring of Ishmael, so that he is not remembered by those who come after him except with good until the Day of Resurrection. That is because Abraham—peace be upon him—said in the Surah of Ash-Shu'ara (the Poet): 'And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations.' He says: 'I will not be mentioned among all the nations after me except with a good mention.'
﴿وَتَركنَا عَلَيْهِ﴾ أبقينا عَلَيْهِ ﴿فِي الآخرين﴾ الثَّنَاء الحَسَن؛ [يُرِيد الذّكر الْحَسَن لإكرامه لإسماعيل، أَلا يذكر من بعده إِلَّا بِخَير إِلَى يَوْم الْقِيَامَة وَذَلِكَ أَن إِبْرَاهِيم ﷺ قَالَ فِي سُورَة باخع ﴿وَاجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الآخرين﴾ يَقُول: لَا أذكر فِي جَمِيع الْأُمَم من بعدِي إِلَّا بذكرٍ حسن.
