"And We placed between them"—meaning: And We had placed between them—"and the towns which We had blessed"—meaning: the land of Ash-Sham (the Levant)—"conspicuous towns"—meaning: connected, where one can see the other—"and We determined the stages therein" (fol. 277); The Tafsir of al-Kalbi: meaning the places of midday rest and overnight stay—"Travel therein by nights and days in safety." They used to travel for a journey of four months in safety, with none of them causing harm to another, and even if a man were to meet the killer of his father, he would not harm him.
﴿وَجَعَلنَا بَينهم﴾ أَي: وَكُنَّا جعلنَا بَينهم ﴿وَبَيْنَ الْقرى الَّتِي باركنا فِيهَا﴾ يَعْنِي: أَرض الشَّام ﴿قُرًى ظَاهِرَةً﴾ أَي: مُتَّصِلَة؛ ينظر بَعْضهَا إِلَى بعض ﴿وقدرنا فِيهَا السّير﴾ (ل ٢٧٧) تَفْسِير الْكَلْبِيّ: يَعْنِي المقيل وَالْمَبِيت ﴿سِيرُوا فِيهَا لَيَالِيَ وَأَيَّامًا آمِنْينَ﴾ كَانُوا يَسِيرُونَ مسيرَة أَرْبَعَة أشهر فِي أَمَان لَا يُحَرك بَعضهم بَعْضًا، وَلَو لَقِي الرجلُ قاتِلَ أَبِيه لم يحركه
