Yahya said: I heard some of them say, 'It was a bird whose breast was of gold, its wings of brocade, and its head a red ruby.' He was captivated by it—for he had a son whom he loved—so when its beauty impressed him, he felt an urge to capture it and give it to his son. Al-Hasan said: When he turned toward it, it began flying from one battlement to another, not letting him lose hope, until it appeared above the sanctuary. Behind the sanctuary was a wall where menstruating women would bathe once they were purified, and no one could overlook that area except the one who climbed above the sanctuary. No one climbed it. He said: David climbed behind that bird, and a neighbor's wife, whom he did not know, suddenly appeared to him bathing. He saw her unexpectedly, then lowered his gaze from her, yet she impressed him. He came to her door and inquired about her and her husband. They said, 'Her husband is in David's armies.' Not long after, his commander sent him as a messenger to David. He came to David with his dispatches, then went to his family and reported that the Prophet of God, David, had come to his door inquiring about him and his family. The man did not manage to reach his family before returning to David, fearing that something from God had occurred regarding his family. He came to David, who had finished with his dispatches, and wrote to the commander of that army to place him at the vanguard of the people. He intended for the man to be killed as a martyr and to marry his wife lawfully, yet the intention was flawed. He placed him at the vanguard of the people, and the man was killed. He said: While David was in his sanctuary with the guards around him, two men in the form of humans climbed over into the sanctuary. He was startled by them, but they said, 'Do not fear! We are two disputants; one of us has transgressed against the other, so judge between us with truth and do not be unjust (la tushtit),' meaning: do not be oppressive, 'and guide us,' meaning: show us the way, 'to the straight path,' meaning: to the right path. He said: 'State your case.' One of them said, 'Indeed, this is my brother,' meaning: my companion, 'who has ninety-nine ewes, while I have one ewe. He said, 'Entrust it to me,' meaning: add it to mine, 'and he overpowered me in the argument,' in the dispute.
قَالَ يَحْيَى: سَمِعْتُ بَعضهم يَقُولُ: طَائِر جؤجؤه من ذهب، وجناحاه ديباجٌ، وَرَأسه ياقوته حَمْرَاء فأعجبه - وَكَانَ لَهُ بني يُحِبهُ - فَلَمَّا أعجبه حُسْنه وَقع فِي نَفسه أَن يَأْخُذهُ وَيُعْطِيه ابْنه. قَالَ الْحسن: فَلَمَّا انْصَرف إِلَيْهِ (ل ٢٩٣) , فَجعل يطير فِي شُرْفةٍ إِلَى شُرْفةٍ وَلَا يؤيسه؛ حَتَّى ظهر فَوق الْمِحْرَاب، وَخلف الْمِحْرَاب حَائِط تَغْتَسِل فِيهِ النِّسَاء الحُيّض إِذا طهُرن لَا يشرف عَلَى ذَلكَ الْحَائِض أحدٌ إِلَّا من صعد فَوق الْمِحْرَاب. لَا يصْعَدُه أحدٌ من النَّاس قَالَ: فَصَعدَ داودُ خلف ذَلكَ الطَّائِر ففاجأته امرأه جَاره لم يعرفهَا تَغْتَسِل , فرآها فَجْأَة ثمَّ غضّ بَصَره عَنْهَا وأعجبته؛ فَأتى بَابهَا , فَسَأَلَ عَنْهَا وَعَن زَوجهَا قَالُوا: زَوجهَا فِي أجناد دَاوُد فَلم يلبث إِلَّا يَسِيرا حَتَّى بَعثه عَامله بريدًا إِلَى دَاوُد فَأتى دَاوُد بكتبه ثمَّ انْطلق إِلَى أَهله فَأخْبر أنَّ نَبِي اللَّه دَاوُد أَتَى بَابه فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُ وَعَن أَهله , فَلم يصل الرجل إِلَى أَهله حَتَّى رَجَعَ إِلَى دَاوُد مَخَافَة أَن يكون حدث من اللَّه فِي أَهله أمرٌ فَأتى دَاوُد وَقد فرغ من كتبه , وَكتب إِلَى عَامل ذَلكَ الْجند أَن يَجعله عَلَى مُقَدّمَة الْقَوْم؛ فَأَرَادَ أَن يقتل الرجل شَهِيدا ويتزوج امْرَأَته حَلَالا، إِلَّا أَن النيّة كَانَت مدْخولة , فَجعله عَلَى مقدّمة الْقَوْم فَقتل ذَلكَ الرجل قَالَ: فَبَيْنَمَا دَاوُد فِي محرابه والحرس حوله إِذْ تسوّر عَلَيْهِ المحرابُ ملكان فِي صُورَة آدميين , فَفَزعَ مِنْهُمَا فَقَالَا: ﴿لَا تَخَفْ خَصْمَانِ بَغَى بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْننَا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تشطط﴾ أَي: لَا تجر ﴿واهدنا﴾ أرشدنا ﴿إِلَى سَوَاء الصِّرَاط﴾ أيْ: إِلَى قصْد الطَّرِيق؛ فَقَالَ: قُصّا قصّتكما , فَقَالَ أَحدهمَا: ﴿إِنَّ هَذَا أخي﴾ يَعْنِي: صَاحِبي ﴿لَهُ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِيَ نَعْجَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ أكفلنيها﴾ أَي: ضمهَا إِلَيّ ﴿وعزني﴾ قهرني ﴿فِي الْخطاب﴾ فِي الْخُصُومَة
