"Then they said: Our Lord, distance our journeys"—al-Hasan said: They became weary of the blessing, just as the Children of Israel became weary of the manna and the quails. God said: "And they wronged themselves"—by their polytheism—"so We made them narratives"—for those after them—"and scattered them completely"—meaning: We dispersed their bones and limbs, [and the soil consumed them].
Muhammad said: It has been said regarding His saying: "And scattered them completely"—meaning: We scattered them in the lands; because when God took away their two gardens and flooded their place, they dispersed into the lands. The Arabs began to use them as a proverb for dispersion, saying: 'They scattered like the hands of Saba (Sheba),' and 'the hands of Saba,' when they took different directions.
"Indeed, in that are signs for every patient one"—in the command of God—"grateful one"—for the blessing of God—and he is the believer.
Surah Saba, verses 20 through 22.
﴿فَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا بَاعِدْ بَيْنَ أَسْفَارِنَا﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَن: ملوا النِّعْمَة؛ كَمَا ملّت بَنو إِسْرَائِيل المنَّ والسَّلوى. قَالَ الله ﴿وظلموا أنفسهم﴾. بشركهم ﴿فجعلناهم أَحَادِيث﴾. لمَن بعدهمْ ﴿وَمَزَّقْنَاهُمْ كُلَّ مُمَزَّقٍ﴾ أَي: بدَّدْنا عظامهم وأوصالهم [فأكلهم] التُّرابُ.
قَالَ: محمدٌ وَقد قِيلَ فِي قَوْله: ﴿وَمَزَّقْنَاهُمْ كُلَّ مُمَزَّقٍ﴾ أَي: مزّقناهمْ فِي الْبِلَاد؛ لأَنهم لما أذهب الله جنتيهم وغرق مكانهم تبدّدُوا فِي الْبِلَاد؛ فَصَارَت الْعَرَب تتمثل بهم فِي الْفرْقَة فَتَقول: تفرّقوا أَيدي سبأ، وأيادي سبأ؛ إِذا أخذُوا فِي وجوهٍ مُخْتَلفَة.
﴿إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَات لكل صبار﴾ على أَمر الله ﴿شكور﴾ لنعمة الله وَهُوَ الْمُؤمن.
