the people's minds, for they saw nothing other than Solomon in his place, praying with them and judging between them.
Yahya said: In the tafsir of Mujahid: The devil was prevented from approaching Solomon's wives.
Al-Kalbi said: When the days of the devil passed and mercy from Allah descended upon Solomon, the devil threw the ring into the sea, and a whale took it. Solomon used to hire himself out to ship owners, transporting fish from the ships to the shore for two fish each day. He took two fish as his wage one day and sold one of them for two loaves of bread. As for the other, he slit its belly and began to clean it, and suddenly he found the ring. He took it, and the people recognized him and rejoiced at his return. He informed them that the devil had done that to him, so Solomon sought forgiveness from his Lord: "He said, 'My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom'" (up to the end of the verse). "So We subjected the wind to him."
"And the devils"—and the devil who had done that deed to him was subjected to him. Solomon took him and placed him in a hollow of marble, then covered him and fastened him with copper, and cast him into the middle of the sea. Solomon remained in his kingdom, pleased and reassured, until Allah took his soul.
