"And mention Our servant Ayyub (Job), when he called to his Lord," the verse. Al-Hasan said: Iblis said: "O my Lord, is there any of Your servants who, if You give me power over him, would be able to resist me?" He said: "Yes; My servant Ayyub." So Allah gave him power over him so that he might exert his effort and lead him astray. He began to come to him with his whisperings and snares, and he (Ayyub) was seeing him plainly, but he (Iblis) was unable to obtain anything from him. When he resisted him, the Devil said: "O my Lord, he has resisted me, so grant me power over his wealth." Allah gave him power over his wealth, and he began to destroy his wealth, category by category. He would come to him while he (Ayyub) was seeing him plainly and say: "O Ayyub, your wealth has perished in such and such a way." He would respond: "Praise be to Allah; O Allah, You gave it to me and You took it from me. If You leave me my soul, I will praise You for Your trial." He continued to do that until he had destroyed all of his wealth. Iblis then said: "O my Lord, Ayyub does not care about his wealth, so grant me power over his body!" So Allah gave him power over him, and he remained for seven years and some months until the gangrene spread through his body."
