"And the evil consequences of what they earned befell them"—that is, what they did of shirk (polytheism). He says: The recompense for their deeds descended upon them; meaning: that which destroyed the nations. "And those who did wrong"—they associated partners with Allah—"from among these"—meaning: this Ummah—"shall be afflicted by the evil consequences of what they earned"; meaning: those among the disbelievers of the end of this Ummah upon whom the Hour will be established. Their predecessors were already destroyed; Abu Jahl and his companions were destroyed by the sword on the day of Badr. "And they are not those who can escape"—meaning: they are not those who will outstrip Us such that We would be unable to seize them, resurrect them, and then punish them.
