[Call upon your Lord]—that is: ask Him—[to lighten for us a day from the punishment. They will say]—meaning: the keepers of Hell—[Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?]—the verse—[They will say, "Yes." They will say, "Then call, but the prayer of the disbelievers is nothing but in error."]
Yahya, on the authority of al-Harith ibn Nabhan, on the authority of Sulayman al-Taymi, who said: "Indeed, the people of the Fire will call upon the keepers of the Fire, but they will not answer them for the duration of forty years; then their answer to them will be:"
﴿ادعوا ربكُم﴾ أَي: سلوه ﴿يُخَفِّفْ عَنَّا يَوْمًا من الْعَذَاب قَالُوا﴾ يَعْنِي: خَزَنَة جَهَنَّم ﴿أَوَ لَمْ تَكُ تَأْتِيكُمْ رُسُلُكُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ﴾ الْآيَة ﴿قَالُوا بَلَى قَالُوا فَادْعُوا وَمَا دُعَاءُ الْكَافِرِينَ إِلا فِي ضلال﴾.
يَحْيَى: عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَبْهَانَ , عَن سلميان التَّيْمِيّ قَالَ: " إِن أهل النَّار يدعونَ خَزَنَة النَّار , فَلَا يجيبونهم مِقْدَار أَرْبَعِينَ سنة , ثمَّ يكون جوابهم إيَّاهُم:
