"And those who dispute concerning Allah," meaning: the polytheists who dispute with the believers, "after He has been responded to," meaning: after the believers have responded to Him, "their argument," their dispute, "is invalid," null and void, "before their Lord." Mujahid said: Some men hoped that the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) would return.
﴿وَالَّذين يحاجون فِي الله﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمُشْركين؛ يحاجون الْمُؤمنِينَ ﴿مِنْ بعد مَا اسْتُجِيبَ لَهُ﴾ يَعْنِي: من بعد مَا اسْتَجَابَ لَهُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿حجتهم﴾ خصومتهم ﴿داحضة﴾ بَاطِلَة ﴿عِنْد رَبهم﴾ قَالَ مجاهدٌ: طَمِع رجالٌ بِأَن تعود الْجَاهِلِيَّة.
