Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 4 · Page 62219

Translation · EN

"And they have assigned the angels"—Al-Suddi said: meaning: they described them. Muhammad [Ibn Abi Zamanin] said: The verb 'to assign' (ja'ala) here is in the sense of speech and judgment. You say: 'I have assigned so-and-so as the most learned of people,' meaning: I have described him as such and judged him to be so. "who are slaves of the Most Merciful as females," like His saying: "And those who are near Him are not too proud to worship Him." Ibn Abbas recited: "who are the slaves of the Most Merciful," like His saying, Glory be to Him: "Rather, they are honored slaves." "Did they witness their creation?"—meaning: they did not witness their creation. "Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned" about it on the Day of Resurrection.
