Allah said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "He said, 'Even if I brought you better guidance than that upon which you found your fathers?'" Then He returned to the story of the nations, informing of what they said to their prophets: "They said" to them: "Indeed, we are, in that with which you have been sent, disbelievers."
Muhammad said: His saying: "Say, 'Even if I brought you better guidance than that upon which you found your fathers?'" The meaning is: Will you follow what you found your fathers upon even if I bring you something that provides better guidance than it?!
قَالَ اللَّه للنَّبِي ﷺ: ﴿قَالَ أَوَ لَوْ جِئْتُكُم بِأَهْدَى مِمَّا وَجَدتُّمْ عَلَيْهِ آبَاءكُمْ﴾ ثمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَى قصَّة الْأُمَم , فَأخْبر بِمَا قَالُوا لأنبيائهم ﴿قَالُوا﴾ لَهُم: ﴿إِنَّا بِمَا أُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهِ كافرون﴾.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: قَوْله: ﴿قل أَو لَو جِئْتُكُمْ بِأَهْدَى مِمَّا وَجَدْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ آبَاءَكُم﴾ الْمَعْنى: أتتبعون مَا وجدْتُم عَلَيْهِ آبَاءَكُم وَإِن جِئتُكُمْ بأهدى مِنْهُ؟!
