"And were it not that the people would become one community," the interpretation of al-Hasan: were it not that you would unite upon disbelief.
"We would have given to those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful for their houses silver roofs and stairways upon which they ascend," meaning: steps upon which they mount to the tops of their houses.
Interpretation of Surah al-Zukhruf from verse 34 to verse 39.
﴿وَلَوْلا أَنْ يَكُونَ النَّاسُ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَة﴾ تَفْسِير الْحسن: لَوْلَا أَن تجتمعوا على الْكفْر.
﴿لَجَعَلْنَا لِمَنْ يَكْفُرُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ لِبُيُوتِهِمْ سُقُفًا من فضَّة ومعارج عَلَيْهَا﴾ اي: درج ﴿عَلَيْهَا يظهرون﴾ أَي: يرقون إِلَى ظُهُور بُيُوتهم.
