His saying: "And it will not benefit you this day, as you have done wrong"—meaning: as you have associated others with Allah—"that you are partners in the punishment." He and his devil are joined in a single chain; each of them disavows the other, and each of them curses the other.
Muhammad said: Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Mubarrad mentioned that the meaning of this verse is that they are denied the comfort of shared experience (al-ta'assi); for shared experience alleviates affliction. So, they were informed that partnership in the punishment would not benefit them. And he cited the lines of al-Khansa:
(And were it not for the multitude of those weeping around me... for their brothers, I would have killed myself)
(For they do not weep for one like my brother, but rather... I console the soul for him through shared experience)
