"And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its sister" (43:48). Al-Hasan's interpretation: The hand was greater than the staff. "And We seized them with the punishment so that they"—meaning, that those who came after them, from those who were upon their religion of the disbelievers—"might return" (43:48) to faith.
﴿وَمَا نُرِيهِمْ مِنْ آيَةٍ إِلا هِيَ أكبر من أُخْتهَا﴾ تَفْسِير الْحسن: كَانَت اليدُ أكبر من الْعَصَا ﴿وَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْعَذَابِ لَعَلَّهُمْ﴾ لَعَلَّ مَنْ بعدهمْ ممّن كَانَ على دينهم من الْكفَّار ﴿يَرْجِعُونَ﴾ إِلَى الْإِيمَان
