"And when the son of Mary is presented as an example, behold, your people shout (yasiddun) for joy concerning it." This means: they laugh, according to the reading of those who recited it with a kasra on the sad. As for the one who recited it with a damma, "yasuddun" (they turn away), it is from the word sudud; meaning: they flee.
The interpretation of al-Kalbi: "When the verse 'Indeed, you and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell, you will be entering it' was revealed, the Messenger of Allah stood opposite the door of the Kaaba, then he recited this verse. The people of Mecca were deeply affected by it. Ibn al-Ziba'ra, the poet, entered upon them while the Quraysh were engaged in discussing this verse. He said: 'Has Muhammad spoken this?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'By Allah, if he admits this to me, I will surely defeat him in argument.' He met him and said: 'O Muhammad, tell me about the verse you just recited, was it revealed specifically regarding us and our deities, or regarding all nations and their deities?' He said: 'No, but regarding you and your deities, and regarding the nations and their deities.' He said: 'I have defeated you in argument, by the Lord of the Kaaba! Do you not praise Jesus, Mary, and the angels, while you know that the Christians worship Jesus?'"
﴿وَلَمَّا ضُرِبَ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ مَثَلا إِذا قَوْمك مِنْهُ يصدون﴾ أَي: يَضْحَكُونَ؛ فِي قِرَاءَة من قَرَأَهَا بِكَسْر الصَّاد، وَمن قَرَأَهَا برفعها ﴿يصُدُّون﴾ فَهُوَ من الصدود؛ أَي: يفرون.
تَفْسِير الْكَلْبِيّ: " لما نزلت ﴿إِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ أَنْتُمْ لَهَا وَارِدُونَ﴾ قَامَ رَسُول الله مُقَابِلَ بَابِ الْكَعْبَةِ، ثُمَّ اقْتَرَأَ هَذِه الْآيَة، فوجَد مِنْهَا أهل مَكَّة وجدا شَدِيدا؛ فَدخل عَلَيْهِم ابْن الزِّبَعْرَى الشَّاعِر وقريش يَخُوضُونَ فِي ذكر هَذِه الْآيَة، فَقَالَ: أمحمدٌ تكلم بِهَذِهِ؟ ﴿قَالُوا: نعم، قَالَ: وَالله إِن اعْترف لي بِهَذَا لأَخْصُمَنَّه، فَلَقِيَهُ فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، أَرَأَيْتَ الْآيَةَ الَّتِي قَرَأْتَ آنِفا، أفينا وَفِي آلِهَتنَا نزلت خَاصَّةً أَمْ فِي الْأُمَمِ وَآلِهَتِهِمْ؟ قَالَ: لَا؛ بَلْ فِيكُمْ وَفِي آلِهَتكُم وَفِي الْأُمَم وآلهتهم: فقالي: خصمتُك وربِّ الْكَعْبَة﴾ أَلَيْسَ تُثْنِي على عِيسَى وَمَرْيَم وَالْمَلَائِكَة خيرا، وَقد علمت أَن النَّصَارَى تعبد عِيسَى
