some people, and they were the Nestorian [sect] of the Christians. The other two said: 'We bear witness that you are a liar!' They said to the third: 'What do you say about Jesus?' He replied: 'He is a god, his mother is a god, and God is a god.' Some people followed him in this, and they were the Isra'iliyyah [sect] of the Christians. Then the fourth said: 'I bear witness that you are a liar, but rather he is the servant of God, His messenger, His word, and His spirit.' The group disputed, and the Muslim said: 'I adjure you by God, do you know that Jesus used to eat food, and that God does not eat food?' They said: 'Yes, by God.' He said: 'Do you know that Jesus used to sleep, and that God does not sleep?' They said: 'Yes, by God.' The Muslim defeated them in argument; the people fought, and it was mentioned to us that the Jacobites prevailed that day and the Muslim was killed.
God says: 'Woe to those who did wrong'—meaning those who committed shirk (polytheism)—to the end of the verse.
