"And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour'"—meaning the Resurrection—"there is no doubt about it," meaning there is no uncertainty regarding it. "You said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only an assumption,'" meaning we have no doubt except for conjecture, "'and we are not convinced'" (fol. 323) that the Hour is coming.
Muhammad said: "[(The Hour) can be read in the nominative or accusative case. Whoever] reads it in the nominative does so based on the meaning of [an initial subject (ibtida')]."
﴿وَإِذَا قِيلَ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حق والساعة﴾ يَعْنِي: الْقِيَامَة ﴿لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا﴾ لَا شكّ فِيهَا ﴿قُلْتُمْ مَا نَدْرِي مَا السَّاعَةُ إِنْ نَظُنُّ إِلَّا ظنا﴾ مَا نشكُّ إِلَّا شكًّا ﴿وَمَا نَحن بمستيقنين﴾ (ل ٣٢٣) أَن السَّاعَة آتيةٌ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: [(السَّاعَة) ترفع وتنصب فَمن] رفع فعلى معنى [الِابْتِدَاء]،
