His saying: 'And the evils of what they earned became apparent to them,' meaning: when He became angry with them, they realized that those deeds of theirs were evils, whereas they did not consider them to be evils.
'And they were encompassed' means it descended upon them, 'by what they used to ridicule.' They used to ridicule the Prophet and the believers, so the punishment for that ridicule encompassed them, and they ended up in the Fire.
Interpretation of Surah al-Jathiyah from verse 34 to verse 37.
قَوْله ﴿وَبَدَا لَهُمْ سَيِّئَاتُ مَا عمِلُوا﴾ أَي: حِين غضب عَلَيْهِم علمُوا أَن أَعْمَالهم تِلْكَ سيئات، وَلم يَكُونُوا يرَوْنَ أَنَّهَا سيئاتٌ.
﴿وَحَاقَ بهم﴾ نزل بهم ﴿مَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُون﴾ كَانُوا يستهزئون بِالنَّبِيِّ وَالْمُؤمنِينَ؛ فحاق بهم عُقُوبَة ذَلِك الِاسْتِهْزَاء، فصاروا فِي النَّار.
