"And indeed We had established them in that in which We had not established you," meaning: in that which We have not established you, as in His saying: "They were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children."

"And there encompassed them"—meaning: there descended upon them—"that which they used to ridicule," meaning: the punishment for their ridicule descended upon them; that is, that with which He punished them.
