of hypocrisy. {If the matter is determined} by Jihad in the way of Allah, {then if they had been true to Allah}, so that the inner and outer aspects of their affair had been truthful, {it would have been better for them}, meaning: the hypocrites.
من النِّفَاق ﴿فَإِذَا عَزَمَ الأَمْرُ﴾ بِالْجِهَادِ فِي سَبِيل اللَّه ﴿فَلَوْ صدقُوا الله﴾ فَكَانَ بَاطِن أَمرهم وَظَاهره صدقا ﴿لَكَانَ خيرا لَهُم﴾ يَعْنِي: بِهِ الْمُنَافِقين.
