"The ones who remained behind will say when you set out toward the spoils [of war] to take them"—and they are the hypocrites—"Let us follow you," saying this to the believers. This was when they [the believers] intended to go out to Khaybar; they [the hypocrites] loved to go out to obtain some of the spoils. Allah had already promised these to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he (peace be upon him) did not let any of the hypocrites go out with him to Khaybar, for Allah had commanded him to do that; they were only for those who witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan on the day of Hudaybiyyah. "They wish to change the words of Allah. Say, 'Never will you follow us,'" meaning: you will never go out with us. "Thus did Allah say before," that you shall not go out. "But they will say, 'Rather, you envy us,'" that you are only preventing us from going out with you due to envy. Allah said, "But they were not understanding except a little," regarding Allah. Then He made an exception for the believers, saying, "Except a little," for they are the ones who understand regarding Allah.
