"Intense against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves," meaning: affectionate toward one another. "You see them bowing and prostrating," meaning: the five prayers. "Seeking bounty from Allah and pleasure," through prayer, fasting, and the entirety of the religion. "Their mark is on their faces from the effect of prostration." Some said: Their mark in the Hereafter is that they will arise with bright, white traces on their limbs from the effects of wudu (ablution). "That is their description in the Torah."
﴿أَشِدَّاءُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ﴾ يَعْنِي: متوادين ﴿تراهم ركعا سجدا﴾ يَعْنِي: الصَّلَوَات الْخمس ﴿يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلا من الله ورضوانا﴾ بِالصَّلَاةِ والصَّوْم وَالدّين كُله ﴿سِيمَاهُمْ فِي وُجُوهِهِمْ مِنْ أَثَرِ السُّجُودِ﴾ قَالَ بَعضهم: سِيمَاهُمْ فِي الآخرين يقومُونَ غرًّا مُحجَّلين من أَثَرِ الْوضُوء ﴿ذَلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ﴾
