His statement: "O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allah and His Messenger" [Quran 49:1], the interpretation of Mujahid is: Do not act presumptuously before the Messenger of Allah regarding any matter until Allah decides it upon his tongue.
Muhammad says: It is said that such-and-such a person "puts himself before" the Imam or his father; meaning: he hastens to issue a command or a prohibition.
قَوْله: ﴿يَا أَيهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدي الله وَرَسُوله﴾ الْآيَة، تَفْسِير مُجَاهِد: تفتاتوا على رَسُول الله بِشَيْء حَتَّى يَقْضِيه اللَّه على لِسَانه.
قَالَ محمدٌ: يُقَال فلَان يقدم بَين يَدي الإِمَام وَبَين يَدي أَبِيه؛ أَي: يعجل بِالْأَمر وَالنَّهْي.
