[They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam.] The interpretation of al-Hasan: These were believers, not hypocrites, but they used to say to the Messenger of Allah, 'We accepted Islam before the children of so-and-so accepted Islam, and we fought with you before the children of so-and-so fought.' So Allah revealed, [Rather, Allah has conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith, if you should be truthful.]—meaning: if you are truthful and have been recognized for your truthfulness, then the favor belongs to Allah and His Messenger over you.
﴿يمنون عَلَيْك أَن أَسْلمُوا﴾ تَفْسِير الْحسن: هَؤُلَاءِ مُؤمنُونَ وَلَيْسوا بمنافقين، وَلَكنهُمْ كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ لرَسُول الله: أسْلَمْنا قبل أَن يسلم بَنو فلَان، وقاتلنا مَعَك قبل أَن يُقَاتل بَنو فلَان؛ فَأنْزل اللَّه ﴿بَلِ اللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَدَاكُمْ لِلإِيمَانِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ﴾ أَي: إِن كُنْتُم صَادِقين عُرِفْتُم بِالصّدقِ، إِن المنَّة لله وَلِرَسُولِهِ عَلَيْكُم.
