Muhammad said: 'I have retained (waʿaitu) knowledge' and 'I have retained (waʿaitu) what you said,' meaning: I have memorized it. This applies to everything you memorize within yourself. It is said for everything you store outside of yourself: 'I have deposited it (awʿaitu-hu),' and from this comes the phrase 'I deposited (awʿaitu) the goods in the container (wiʿāʾ).' قَالَ محمدٌ: وَعَيْتُ الْعلم وووَعَيْتُ مَا قلتَ؛ أَيْ: حَفِظْتُهُ، وَكَذَلِكَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَفِظْتُهُ فِي نَفْسِكَ، وَيُقَالُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَفِظْتَهُ فِي غَيْرِ نَفْسِكَ: أوعيْته، وَمِنْهُ أوعيت الْمَتَاع فِي الْوِعَاء. تَفْسِير سُورَة الحاقة من آيَة (١٣ - ١٧)
