Abbas: They were two hypocrites who manifested faith while concealing polytheism. "So they availed them not against Allah at all." The deeds of Noah and Lot (peace be upon them both) did not avail their wives against Allah at all. This is an example set forth by Allah, warning Hafsah and Aisha regarding what (had) occurred, as narrated at the beginning of the Surah.
عَبَّاسٍ: كَانَتَا مُنَافِقَتَيْنِ تُظهران الإِيمَانَ، وتُسرَّان الشِّرْكَ ﴿فَلَمْ يُغْنِيَا عَنْهُمَا من الله شَيْئا﴾ لَمْ يُغنِ عملُ نُوحٍ وَلُوطٍ عليهما السلام عَنِ امْرَأَتَيْهِمَا مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا؛ وَهَذَا مَثَلٌ ضَرَبَهُ اللَّهُ يُحَذِّرُ حَفْصَةَ وَعَائِشَةَ لِلَّذِي (كَانَ) (١) مِمَّا قَصَّ فِي أَوَّلِ السُّورَة،
