He said: "And Mary, the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity"—meaning the neck/opening of her garment against indecencies—"and We breathed into it of Our spirit." Gabriel touched the opening of her garment with his finger and breathed into it, and it reached her womb, so she became pregnant. He said: "And she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures," meaning all of the scriptures, according to the tafsir of al-Hasan. "And she was of the obedient ones," meaning those who are obedient to their Lord. Muhammad [Ibn Abi Zamanin] said: The Arabs say of a chaste person: "He is pure of garment," and "He is of clean girdle (al-hajzah)."(3)
