"Indeed, he thought and determined," up to His saying: "This is nothing but the speech of a human being." Al-Kalbi's interpretation: Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah said, "O my people, the matter of this man," meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), "has spread, and the season (of pilgrimage) has arrived. The people will ask you about him, so what will you say? If, by Allah, you speak, they will question him and find him eloquent and exalted, and they will call you liars. If, by Allah, they meet him, he will tell them things that neither a soothsayer nor anyone else tells them." They said, "We will say he is a poet." Al-Walid said, "We know poetry; we recite it, listen to it, and we hear nothing of it from him." They said, "Then he is a soothsayer." He said, "We have seen soothsayers, and this is not their humming or rhyming." They said, "Then he is a madman." He said, "We have seen madness, and this is not the choking or obsession of madness." They said, "Then he is a sorcerer." He said, "We have seen sorcerers, and this is not their knots or incantations." They said, "Then what shall we say?" He said, "By Allah, his speech has sweetness, its root is like a palm tree, and its branches are fruitful, and nothing you say about him will be anything but rejected. The closest thing is for you to say that he is a sorcerer who separates a man from his father, his brother, his wife, and his kin." So they departed having agreed upon this, and it was said, "Al-Walid of Quraysh has become a renegade." Abu Jahl said, "I will take care of him for you." Abu Jahl set off and sat with him, appearing sorrowful. Al-Walid said to him, "What saddens you, O son of my brother?" He said, "Why should I not be sad when Quraysh is collecting funds for you to help you in your old age and infirmity?"
