Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 5 · Page 289

Translation · EN

He said, "Am I not more possessed of wealth and children than them?" He said, "They say that you said what you said in order to obtain some of the surplus food of Muhammad and his companions." He said, "By Allah, they do not have enough food to be full, so what surplus could they have? However, I spoke extensively about him, and thus he says it is sorcery and the speech of a human being." His people gathered around him and said, "How, O Abu al-Mughirah, can his speech be sorcery or the speech of a human being?" He said, "I remind you by Allah, do you know that he has separated the sons of such-and-such woman from her husband, and between such-and-such man and his son, and between such-and-such man and his brother's son, and between such-and-such client of the tribe of so-and-so and his masters?"—meaning those who accepted Islam. They said, "Yes, by Allah, he has done that." He said, "Then he is a sorcerer." So Allah revealed concerning him: "Indeed, he thought and determined. So may he be destroyed [cursed]," meaning he was cursed, "how he determined. Then may he be destroyed," meaning he was cursed, "how he determined. Then he considered. Then he frowned and scowled," meaning he looked grim.

Muhammad said: "Frowned and scowled" means he knit his brows and showed dislike. It is said: "Basara" and "Basura." The root of the word is from their saying: "The male camel 'basara' the she-camel," if he mates with her before her time.

"Then he turned back and was arrogant. And he said, 'This is,'" meaning the Quran, "'not but sorcery, which is handed down.'" It is narrated: "'This is nothing but the speech of a human being,'" meaning Addas, the servant of Utbah, as in His saying: "And We certainly know that they say, 'It is only a human being who teaches him.'" He is Addas, according to the interpretation of al-Hasan.
