[We feed you only for the countenance of Allah, we wish not from you reward or gratitude] Mujahid’s interpretation: They said that this was in their hearts, and they did not speak it aloud, but Allah knew it of them, so He praised them for it.
﴿إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنْكُمْ جَزَاءً وَلا شُكُورًا﴾ تَفْسِيرُ مُجَاهِدٍ: قَالُوا: هَذَا فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَمْ يَنْطِقُوا بِهِ، فَعَلِمَ اللَّهُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ، فَأَثْنَى بِهِ عَلَيْهِم
