(They shall not taste therein any coolness), which is like His saying: (neither cool nor refreshing). Some of them said: The coolness (al-bard) is sleep.
Muhammad said: It was named as such because the thirst of a human being cools within it.
(And no drink).
﴿لَا يذوقون فِيهَا بردا﴾ هِيَ مِثْلُ قَوْلِهِ: ﴿لَا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كريم﴾ وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: الْبَرْدُ النَّوْمُ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: سُمِّيَ بِذَلِكَ؛ لِأَنَّهُ يَبْرُدُ فِيهِ عَطَشُ الْإِنْسَانِ.
﴿وَلا شَرَابًا﴾
