to each man and woman among them: "Either you leave your religion, or we shall cast you into the fire." He would say: "I will not leave my religion for anything!" So he was cast into it and burned, until they had finished them all. There remained one woman with a child of hers, and she hesitated. The child said to her: "Go ahead and do not be a hypocrite!" So she went forward and was burned.
Yahya said: "He was a young child who had not spoken before that." Mujahid said: "That took place in Najran."
لِلرَّجُلِ وَلِلْمَرْأَةِ مِنْهُمْ: إِمَّا أَنْ تَتْرُكَ دِينَكَ وَإِمَّا أَنْ نَقْذِفَكَ فِي النَّارِ. فَيَقُولُ: مَا أَنَا بِتَارِكِ دِينِي لِشَيْءٍ! فَيُقْذَفُ فِيهَا فَيَحْتَرِقُ حَتَّى أَتَوْا عَلَيْهِمْ، فَبَقِيَتِ امْرَأَةٌ وَمَعَهَا صَبِيٌّ فَتَهَيَّبَتْ، فَقَالَ لَهَا الصَّبِيُّ: امْضِي وَلا تُنَافِقِي، فَمَضَتْ فَاحْتَرَقَتْ.
قَالَ يَحْيَى: كَانَ صَغِيرًا لَمْ يَتَكَلَّمْ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ، وَقَالَ مُجَاهِد: وَذَلِكَ بِنَجْرَان.
