"And you devour the inheritance with a greedy devouring," meaning: you do not care whether it is from unlawful or lawful sources.
Muhammad said: "Greedy" (lamma) means intense. It is derived from your saying: "I gathered (lamamtu) the thing" when you collect it. The origin of the word inheritance (turath) is from "he who inherits" (al-warith), derived from "I inherited" (warithtu). The 'ta' in it is a transformed 'waw'. It is said that he intended the inheritance of orphans.
﴿وتأكلون التراث أكلا لما﴾ أَيْ: لَا تُبَالُونَ مِنْ حَرَامٍ أَوْ حَلالٍ.
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: لَمًّا شَدِيدًا، وَهُوَ مِنْ قَوْلِكَ: لَمَمْتُ الشَّيْءَ إِذَا جَمَعْتُهُ وَالتُّرَاثُ أَصْلُهُ الْوَارِثُ مِنْ: وَرِثْتُ، التَّاءُ فِيهِ مُنْقَلِبَةٌ عَنْ وَاوٍ، يُقَالُ: إِنَّهُ أَرَادَ تراث الْيَتَامَى.
