Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Aziz by Ibn Abi Zamanin
Volume 5 · Page 910

Translation · EN

"Then his mother is Hawiyah (the Abyss)." Hawiyah is one of the names of Hell, and it is the lowest gate.

Muhammad said: The meaning of "his mother" is his dwelling place. It is also said: It is called "his mother" in reference to his dwelling, because the origin of tranquility is to return to mothers.

Yahya said, on the authority of al-Hasan ibn Dinar, on the authority of al-Hasan al-Basri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Your souls are presented to your kin and your relatives among your dead. When a deceased person dies, they receive him as one receives a bearer of good tidings, and they say: 'Leave him until he rests, for he was in distress and grief.' Then they ask him about people; if he mentions something good, they praise Allah and rejoice, and they say: 'O Allah, guide him.' And if he mentions something evil, they seek forgiveness for him. When they ask him about a person who had died before him, he says: 'Alas, he died before me! Did he not pass by you?' They say: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. He was taken to his mother, the Abyss (Hawiyah); a miserable mother and a miserable caretaker.' They continue to ask him until they say: 'Did so-and-so marry? Did so-and-so get married?'"
