Translation · EN

[The fourth interpretation]

557 - Abu 'Abd Allah al-Tahrani informed us in what he wrote to me, Isma'il ibn 'Abd al-Karim narrated to us, 'Abd al-Samad ibn Ma'qil narrated to me that he heard Wahb ibn Munabbih, and he was asked: What is the Manna? He said: Flat bread like millet or like refined flour.

[The fifth interpretation]

558 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja'far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, he said: The Manna was a drink that used to descend upon them like honey; they would mix it with water and then drink it.

[His saying: And the Salwa (quail)]

[The first interpretation]

559 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, 'Abd al-Samad ibn 'Abd al-Warith narrated to us, Qurrah ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Jahdam, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The Salwa is the quail.

560 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The Salwa is a bird similar to the quail; they used to eat from it.

561 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Dinar, from Ibn Munabbih, he said: The Children of Israel asked Moses for meat, so Allah said: "I will feed them from the least meat known on earth." So He sent upon them a wind, and it blew the Salwa—which is the quail—onto their dwellings, in an area of a mile by a mile, up to the height of a spear in the sky. They hid it for the next day, so the meat became putrid and the bread became moldy. Abu Muhammad said: It was narrated from Mujahid, al-Sha'bi, al-Dahhak, al-Hasan, 'Ikrimah, and al-Rabi' ibn Anas similar to what Jahdam narrated from Ibn 'Abbas.

[The second interpretation]

562 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Safwan ibn Salih narrated to us, al-Walid narrated to us, Sa'id informed me, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And the Salwa," he said: The Salwa was a bird tending towards redness; the southerly wind would gather it for them. A man among them would slaughter from it as much as would suffice him for that day, and if he exceeded that, it would spoil and not remain with him. When it was the day of his sixth day, he would gather what would suffice him for his sixth day and his seventh day, because it was a day of worship in which he would not go out for anything nor seek it.
