623 - al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us from al-Hasan and Qatadah regarding His saying: "And humiliation was struck upon them," they both said: They give the jizyah (tribute) willingly while they are humbled.

624 - My father narrated to us, Surayj ibn Yunus narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yazid narrated to us from Juwaybir from al-Dahhak: His saying: "And humiliation was struck upon them," he said: Abasement.
625 - al-Mundhir ibn Shadhan narrated to us, Hawdhah narrated to us, 'Awf narrated to us from al-Hasan: "And humiliation was struck upon them," he said: This community has overtaken them, and the Magians (Majus) even collect the jizyah from them.
626 - al-Husayn ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Musa ibn Muhallim narrated to us, Abu Bakr al-Hanafi narrated to us, 'Abbad ibn Mansur narrated to us: I asked al-Hasan about His saying: "And humiliation was struck upon them," he said: Allah has humbled them such that they have no protection, and Allah has placed them under the feet of the Muslims.

627 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us from Abu Ja'far from al-Rabi' from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "And humiliation and misery were struck upon them," he said: The misery is destitution. It was narrated from al-Suddi and al-Rabi' similarly.
The second view:
628 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Bishr ibn Adam ibn Bint Azhar narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Raja' informed us, 'Ubayd ibn al-Tufayl narrated to us from 'Atiyyah: "And humiliation and misery were struck upon them," he said: The kharaj (land tax).

629 - My father narrated to us, Surayj ibn Yunus narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yazid narrated to us from Juwaybir from al-Dahhak: And the misery is the jizyah.
His saying: "And they incurred wrath from Allah"
630 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me. 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "And they incurred wrath from Allah," he says: They have made retribution mandatory for themselves.

٦٢٣ - حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ أَنْبَأَ عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ «١» ، أَنْبَأَ مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ وَقَتَادَةَ فِي قوله: وضربت عليهم الذلة قَالا: يُعْطُونَ الْجِزْيَةَ عَنْ يَدٍ وَهُمْ صَاغِرُونَ.

٦٢٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ عَنْ جُوَيْبِرٍ عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ:
قَوْلُهُ: وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ قَالَ: الذُّلُّ.
٦٢٥ - حَدَّثَنَا الْمُنْذِرُ بْنُ شَاذَانَ ثنا هَوْذَةُ ثنا عَوْفٌ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ: وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذلة قَالَ: أَدْرَكَتْهُمْ هَذِهِ الأُمَّةَ، وَإِنَّ الْمَجُوسَ لَتُجْبِيهِمُ الْجِزْيَةَ.
٦٢٦ - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ مُحَلِّمٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ ثنا عَبَّادُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ: سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ: وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ قَالَ: أَذَلَّهُمُ اللَّهُ فَلا مَنَعَةَ لَهُمْ، وَجَعَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ تحت أَقْدَامَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ.

٦٢٧ - حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ ثنا آدَمُ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: وَضَرَبْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَالْمَسْكَنَةُ قَالَ: الْمَسْكَنَةُ الْفَاقَةُ. وَرُوِيَ عَنِ السُّدِّيِّ وَالرَّبِيعِ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.
الْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:
٦٢٨ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ ثنا بِشْرُ بن آدم بن بنت أزهر، أنبأ عبد الله ابن رَجَاءٍ ثنا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ الطُّفَيْلِ عَنْ عَطِيَّةَ: وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَالْمَسْكَنَةُ قَالَ: الْخَرَاجُ.
الْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:
٦٢٩ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ثنا سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ عَنْ جُوَيْبِرٍ عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ:
والمسكنة الجزية.
قوله: وباؤ بِغَضَبٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ
٦٣٠ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُكَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ لَهِيعَةَ.
حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ: وباؤ بغضب من الله يقول: استوجبوا سخطا.
