666 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas: Regarding His saying: "you would have been among the losers," he said: They lost both this world and the Hereafter.

His saying: "And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the Sabbath"

667 - Al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar informed us from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the Sabbath," he said: They were forbidden from hunting fish on the Sabbath, and they (the fish) would surface before them on the Sabbath day. So they were tested by that, and they transgressed and hunted them, so Allah made them apes, disgraced.

668 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Damrah narrated to us from 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' from his father, who said: They split into three groups: a group that ate (the fish), a group that withdrew and did not forbid (the act), and a group that forbade (the act) and did not withdraw. Then those who transgressed on the Sabbath were called out to three times. They were called: "O people of the village!" A group took heed, then they were called: "O people of the village!" A group took heed that was larger than the first. Then they were called: "O people of the village!" And the men, women, and children took heed. So Allah said to them: "Be apes, disgraced." Then those who had forbidden them began to enter upon them and say: "O so-and-so, did I not forbid you?" They would signify with their heads, meaning: Yes.

669 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us from al-Suddi: "And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the Sabbath," up to the verse. He said: They were the people of Aylah. When it was the Sabbath day—and Allah had forbidden the Jews from working on the Sabbath—not a single fish remained in the sea but that it came out until they stuck their snouts out of the water. But when it was Sunday, they would remain in the deep of the sea, and nothing of them would be seen until the Sabbath day came again. A similar statement was narrated from Qatadah.

His saying: "So We said to them: Be apes, disgraced"

670 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Rabi'ah in al-Massisah narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Ta'ifi narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid from Ibn 'Abbas who said: When those who transgressed on the Sabbath were made into apes, it was only for a short while, then they perished; those who were transformed had no offspring."
