[The fourth interpretation]

784 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Shaybah narrated to us from 'Ata' al-Khurasani regarding His saying: "Do you tell them about what Allah has revealed to you?" He says: Regarding what He has decreed for you and against you.

785 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar al-Wasiti narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to me from 'Abbad ibn Mansur from al-Hasan: His saying: "They said, 'Do you tell them about what Allah has revealed to you, so that they may argue with you about it before your Lord? Do you not then understand?'" He said: These are the Jews; when they met those who believed, they said, "We believe," and when they were alone with one another, some of them said: "Do not tell the companions of Muhammad about what Allah has revealed to you from what is in your Book, so that they may argue with you about it before your Lord and defeat you in argument."

His saying: "Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare?"

786 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, from Abu Ja'far al-Razi, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah: His saying: "Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal," meaning what they concealed of their disbelief in Muhammad and their denial of him, while they find him written down with them.

787 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to us, from 'Abbad ibn Mansur from al-Hasan, who said: Allah said: "Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare?" He said: What they concealed was that whenever they turned away from the companions of Muhammad and were alone with one another, they forbade one another from telling the companions of Muhammad what Allah had revealed to them in their Book, fearing that the companions of Muhammad would argue against them with what was in their own Book before their Lord, in order to dispute with them. "[Do they not know] that Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare?" It was reported from Qatadah similar to what was reported from Abu al-'Aliyah.

His saying: "And what they declare"

788 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, from Abu Ja'far, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah, regarding His saying: "And what they declare," [this refers to] when they said to the believers: "We believe." It was reported from al-Hasan, Qatadah, and al-Rabi' something similar.
