His saying: "And among them are illiterate ones"
789 - Through it [the same chain] from Abu al-'Aliyah, he says Allah says: "And among them are illiterate ones," meaning the Jews.
790 - And through it [the same chain] regarding His saying: "[who] do not know the Book," they do not know what is in it. He said: It was reported from Qatadah and al-Rabi' ibn Anas something similar.
His saying: "The Book"
791 - Usayd ibn 'Asim narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn Hafs narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us from Mansur, who said: I asked Ibrahim about the slaughtered animals of the Arab Christians. He said: "There is no harm [in eating them]." Then he recited: "And among them are illiterate ones who do not know the Book except in wishful thinking," then he said: "Is there not among the People of the Book those who do not master the Book?"
His saying: "except in wishful thinking"

792 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth narrated to us, Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah from Ibn 'Abbas: "except in wishful thinking," he says: except for hearsay/stories.
The second interpretation:
793 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far [narrated to us] from al-Rabi' from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "except in wishful thinking," they hope for things from Allah that they are not entitled to. It was reported from al-Rabi' ibn Anas and Qatadah something similar.
The third interpretation:
794 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, from Warqa' from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid: "And among them are illiterate ones who do not know the Book except in wishful thinking," except for lies.
His saying: "And they are only assuming"
795 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us from Abu al-'Aliyah, meaning His saying: "And they are only assuming," they hold assumptions without truth. It was reported from Qatadah and al-Rabi' ibn Anas something similar.
796 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid: "And they are only assuming," they are only lying.

قوله: وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ
٧٨٩ - بِهِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ يَقُولُ اللَّهُ: وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ يَعْنِي الْيَهُودَ.
٧٩٠ - وَبِهِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: لَا يَعْلَمُونَ الْكِتَابَ لَا يَدْرُونَ مَا فِيهِ. قَالَ: وَرُوِيَ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ وَالرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.

سَأَلْتُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ ذَبَائِحِ نَصَارَى الْعَرَبِ. قَالَ: لَا بَأْسَ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ: وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ الْكِتَابَ إِلا أَمَانِيَّ ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَوَ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ مَنْ لَا يُحْسِنُ الْكِتَابَ.

٧٩٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عِصَامُ بْنُ رَوَّادٍ ثنا آدَمُ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: إِلا أَمَانِيَّ يَتَمَنَّوْنَ عَلَى اللَّهِ مَا لَيْسَ لَهُمْ وَرُوِيَ عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ وَقَتَادَةَ نَحْوُ ذَلِكَ.

٧٩٤ - حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الصَّبَّاحِ ثنا شَبَابَةُ عَنْ وَرْقَاءَ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ «١» وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ الْكِتَابَ إِلا أَمَانِيَّ إِلا كَذِباً.
قَوْلُهُ: وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلا يَظُنُّونَ
