His saying: "Say, 'Have you taken a covenant with Allah, for Allah will never break His covenant?'"

818 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from Qatadah who said: The Jews said: "We will not enter the Fire except for the measure of the oath, during the number of days in which we worshipped the Calf." So Allah said: "Have you taken a covenant with Allah for this that you say? Do you have a proof and evidence for this, 'for Allah will never break His covenant?' Produce your proof and evidence. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?" Abu Muhammad said: And it was narrated similarly from al-Rabi' ibn Anas.

819 - Al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "Say, 'Have you taken a covenant with Allah?'" A firm promise from Allah for that, that it is as you say?

820 - Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Surur ibn al-Mughirah narrated to me, from 'Abbad ibn Mansur, from al-Hasan, "Say, 'Have you taken a covenant with Allah?'" He said: Do you have a covenant from Allah that He will not punish you? Or have you pleased Allah with your deeds, so you did what He obligated upon you and made a covenant with you, 'for Allah will never break His covenant?' Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?

His saying: "Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?"

821 - Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn al-Munadi informed us in what he wrote to me, Yunus ibn Muhammad al-Mu'addib narrated to us, Shayban al-Nahwi narrated to us, from Qatadah: "Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?" He said: The people spoke lies and falsehood, and they said about Allah what they did not know.

His saying: "Yes, whoever earns evil"

[The First Aspect]

823 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, 'Abd al-Hamid al-Himmani narrated to us, a man—meaning al-Nadr al-Khazzaz—narrated to us, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas: "Yes, whoever earns evil," he said: Polytheism (shirk).
