873 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Abu Shaybah—meaning Shu'ayb ibn Zurayq—narrated to us, from 'Ata' al-Khurasani regarding His saying: "Do you believe in part of the Book and disbelieve in part?" He said: Their disbelief was that they used to kill their children and themselves, and their belief was that they considered it a duty upon them to ransom whoever they found among them as a captive.

His saying: "So what is the recompense of those among you who do that, except disgrace in the life of this world?"

874 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Ghassan informed us, Salamah narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: Muhammad ibn Abi Muhammad narrated to me, from 'Ikrimah or Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas: "So what is the recompense of those among you who do that, except disgrace in the life of this world; and on the Day of Resurrection, they will be returned to the most severe of punishment," up to His saying: "and they will not be helped." Allah informed them of that regarding their actions, for He had forbidden them in the Torah from shedding their blood and made it incumbent upon them to ransom their captives.

His saying: "And on the Day of Resurrection, they will be returned to the most severe of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do."

875 - Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us, 'Affan narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from 'Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib, from 'Abd Allah ibn Habib al-Sulami, he said: The beginning of the verse would be general, and the end of it would be specific. He then recited this verse: "They will be returned to the most severe of punishment. And Allah is not unaware of what you do."

His saying: "Those are the ones who purchased"

876 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar informed me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "Those," whom Allah mentioned in this verse.

877 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Those are the ones who purchased," he said: They preferred.

And by the same chain from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Those are the ones who purchased the life of this world for the Hereafter," he said: They preferred the little of this world over the much of the Hereafter.

His saying: "So the punishment will not be lightened for them"

878 - 'Isam ibn Rawwad narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Abu Ja'far narrated to us, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah regarding His saying: "So the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be helped," he said: It is like His saying: "This is the Day on which they will not speak, nor will it be permitted for them to offer excuses."
